<p> DIED. Helen Hayes, 92, actress; in Nyack, New York. Though
some moviegoers may remember Hayes best for a late-career
accomplishment--her Oscar-winning turn in Airport--Hayes
distinguished herself over eight decades in a succession of
roles, most memorably in her onstage portrayals of royalty
(Victoria Regina, Mary of Scotland). Along the way, Hayes
achieved a certain royalty in her own right and was ultimately
dubbed "the First Lady of the American theater," a tribute to
both her craft and her commitment to the stage.
