  15. <p>     DIED. Helen Hayes, 92, actress; in Nyack, New York. Though
  16. some moviegoers may remember Hayes best for a late-career
  17. accomplishment--her Oscar-winning turn in Airport--Hayes
  18. distinguished herself over eight decades in a succession of
  19. roles, most memorably in her onstage portrayals of royalty
  20. (Victoria Regina, Mary of Scotland). Along the way, Hayes
  21. achieved a certain royalty in her own right and was ultimately
  22. dubbed "the First Lady of the American theater," a tribute to
  23. both her craft and her commitment to the stage.
